Instead of fairly even lines of verse organized more or less into neat stanzas, or single columns of text, Bidart’s poems stagger and bound across the page. Lines of greatly varying length and spacing may end abruptly, giving way to unlineated prose that creates a stark visual and tonal contrast to the lines of verse. By his third book, he was making use of the full range of expression allowed by this prosody: a line might begin flush with the left margin or in the middle of a page; phrases and single words, even whole lines might appear in all capital letters, or in italics, or in italicized capitals; a dash might follow a comma or precede a semicolon.
