For the numerical investigations the same fully detailed vehicle model was simulated. The investigations are based on the RANS simulations carried out by Vdovin et al. 04. 3. For the study of the flow pattern, limiting streamlines were calculated, using the function provided in Ensight. The velocity values at a wall distance of 1mm are projected onto the surface to display the limiting streamlines. In both, CFD and experiment, the investigations were done at a velocity of 100 km/h. In Figure 3 the measured and calculated pressure distributions are shown for the investigated regions.

At zero yaw the tufts located at the lower part of the rear window of the notchback show a pattern which can be attributed to the presence of a separation bubble. A video of the tufts shows that the asymmetric pattern is unsteady. In contrast to the notchback, the tufts on the rear window of the fastback are well aligned with the main flow direction and do not indicate a separation bubble (although this was assumed in former presentations of the authors [3]).
